Bulging Disc vs Herniated Disc

What is a Bulging Disc?

Bulging discs occur when the discs in your spine bulge outside of their normal area. The disc is still intact, and the mucoprotein gel inside has not been leaking out. There is no tear or rupture outside of the annulus layer. Even though the disc may not be in its normal height, shape, or balance, it can still cause significant pain. Untreated bulging discs can herniate.

What is a Herniated Disc (HD)?

Herniated discs occur when the inner nucleus leaks through the protective annulus and into the spinal canal. Herniated disks are more serious than bulging ones because they can put pressure on nearby nerves and cause pain, inflammation, and difficulty with movement. Herniation is caused by trauma, unusual pressure forces, degeneration or desiccation. It can also be from lifting heavy items.

Chiropractic Care Can Help

Many people with herniated discs or bulging disks prefer chiropractic care. Chiropractic is non-invasive, and unlike traditional medical treatments, it allows people to avoid medication.

A correct diagnosis is the first step in chiropractic treatment for herniated or swollen discs. A chiropractor will order x-rays, or an MRI to confirm your condition and determine the disc(s) that are affected. You will be asked about your medical history, your symptoms, your lifestyle, health and any treatments you've tried. You may be asked to take some tests in order to measure your flexibility, mobility and function.

The spine sections around the discs are adjusted as part of a chiropractic strategy to treat herniated and bulging discs. These adjustments are designed to remove pressure and open up the joints so that the disc can realign itself with the rest the spine. Another strategy is to adjust the spinal column to achieve proper alignment.
